Taupo

We departed Napier this morning heading northwest to Taupo which lies at the eastern end of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake formed by a volcanic explosion in 186 AD.

On the way there we stopped at a lookout to view the falls at Ponokura.

We  arrived at Taupo around noon and stopped at a launch ramp/park for a picnic lunch and watched the boats come and go.

It was a beautiful day of 30C and clear blue sky. We went to the iSite and picked up some local information on things to do. We thought a hike to some waterfalls on the Waikato River would be fun. Probably not the smartest selection given the heat and lack of shade for about 50% of the 10 km hike. We passed by a place where some hot springs flow into the river. Lots of bodies in a natural spa.

A lot of people floating down the river above the falls.

It took about an hour to get to the waterfalls which were more like enhanced rapids. They have jet boat rides here too.

We were totally overheated by the end of our walk and decided to head to our accommodation and cool off. The place we found yesterday was a pleasant surprise. A spacious room with a kitchenette complete with hob, fridge and all of the small appliances. The living room came with a large Jacuzzi tub! We also had our own private patio with umbrella which was great for unwinding with a cold Tui.

It was so hot, we decided to head to the beach which was right at our doorstep. The water was very refreshing, probably about 23C.

We checked out some restaurants on Trip Advisor and selected Indian food for tonight. We went to one of the top rated restaurants and found ourselves the only ones eating in the establishment. They seem to do a lot of take away orders however. The food was great in my opinion. Wonder where all of the other patrons were?

We stopped at the waterfront to enjoy the view of the lake. You can see the peaks of Mt. Tongarriro, Mt. Ngauruhoe and snow capped Ruapehu as backdrops to the lake.

Then we discovered it! The top secret Toronto Maple Leafs training camp for future prospects. A tent with real ice and not an NHL scout to be seen.

It was getting near sunset time so we headed out to a park that provided a great view of the lake, town and mountains.

Looking at Taupo

Above: all set up for a time lapse video of sunset! Will post on YouTube.
