Auckland Day 2 - Park Tour

Yesterday we spent most of our time in the downtown core so today, we decided to do a bit of a tour of a couple of the urban parks. Consulting our Lonely Planet Guide book, we decided to head south to the peak of one of the volcanic hills called One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie).

We walked for a few kilometres along the urban streets, stopping at a few shops in the Newmarket area then deciding to hop on the bus for the rest of the trip to Cornwall Park, a huge park area in south Auckland. We walked by the cricket club and tried to figure out the game but never did.

We hiked the One Tree Hill trail to the summit. This park is also an active farm which we found sort of unique for an urban area. When was the last time you saw a herd of cows or flock of sheep in High Park in Toronto?

The monument at the top of the hill was for Sir John Logan Campbell in honour of the Maori People.

The view from the top provides a beautiful view of the city and the area to the south.

We decided to head back north toward the core of the city and hiked through the farmland through a heard of grazing cows.

We managed to shorten the distance again by getting on the bus and travelled to the Auckland Museum.

This was a fabulous museum with several interesting themes on display. We enjoyed the “Landmarks” area with period household furnishing over the past few centuries, the Maori culture display, the Volcanoes display and the New Zealand war displays that covered conflicts from their own civil wars to their involvement in the World Wars.

After walking another couple of kilometres, we were back at our apartment resting our feet before heading out for supper.

Supper was in a little basement Japanese saki/sushi bar that was recommended by the lady at the front desk of our apartment. Fantastic “food on a stick” and an Asahi draft beer!

Kiwi word of the day - “pungy” - to have bad body odour. Seen in an ad on the city bus advising “pungy” people not to ride the bus!
