Milford Sound

We booked a "small group" tour to the Milford Sound area for today. The weather forecast was sunny and 24 C. We awoke to some low fog/mist on Te Anau Lake that made us wonder if we were going to have that spectacular day we were anticipating.

Andrew, from "Trips and Tramps" picked us up at our motel at 7:45 for the two hour drive to Milford Sound. A really nice Ford Transit van with five other people. A good running narrative of the natural features of the area. After a half hour, we hit a roadblock.

Found out sheep are like snow, just drive through them.

We had a stop at Mirror Lakes, guess where the name comes from....

The mist was starting to clear as we approached Milford Sound.

We boarded our cruise boat for a 2 1/2 hour cruise. Beautiful sound and waterfalls.

After the cruise, we stopped at the trailhead for the Routeburn Track for a hike to Key Summit.

We were only allowed 2 1/2 hours for the three hour hike so we had to hustle. We made it to the summit and had some great views.

It would have been nice to spend a bit more time there.

Back home, we relaxed in the spa and had a low effort meal of chili and salad.

After supper, I saw a sailboat with spinnaker sailing down the lake. Apparently it was Wednesday Night Racing at Te Anau Yacht Club. I managed to get down to the waterfront and snap a few photos of the action.

Early to bed as we are off to Doubtful Sound tomorrow morning at 7:00 am.

  1. A great day eh?

That photographer Trey Ratcliff I mentioned has done some amazing shots of that area. Here is my favourite. It reminds me of a Lawren Harris painting.
